Last month casting news broke that Kaci Walfall will be playing Naomi McDuffie, the titular character of the upcoming Naomi show developed for The CW by Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship. Today the network released the first image of Walfall, which comic readers will instantly recognize as an homage to the cover of the first issue of the Naomi miniseries by writers by Brian Michael Bendis & David F. Walker and artist Jamal Campbell.

Here’s how The CW describes Naomi:

The show follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.

Along with Walfall, Naomi will also feature Alexander Wraith as Dee, Cranston Johnson as Zumbado, and Camila Moreno as Lourdes. The series is executive produced by Ava DuVernay, Jill Blankenship, Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes, and produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Bendis, Walker, and Campbell have teased a sequel miniseries for the original Naomi series, though with all three of them having other commitments it may be a while before that arrives. In the meantime the character is featured in Bendis and David Marquez‘s Justice League lineup, where the current villain of the series hails from Naomi’s alternate Earth homeworld.

Production on the Naomi pilot began earlier in April. DuVernay marked the occasion with a teaser photo on Twitter:

The series is the latest DC project for The CW, home to the Arrowverse series including The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Superman and Lois, and Black Lightning. It’s unclear if Naomi will be a part of the Arrowverse or take place in its own universe. Stargirl, formerly of the DC Universe streaming service, will also call The CW its home when its second season begins. A series starring recently-introduced new Wonder Girl Yara Flor was also announced by the network as well, though that project didn’t make it beyond initial development.
