A piece of Star Wars: The Force Awakens concept art reveals an early design for Maz Kanata.
During the marketing campaign of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there were two major characters who were barely shown in the film’s trailers: Snoke and Maz Kanata. The two characters also happened to be fully-CGI creations and many suspect Disney might have been keeping them hidden due to the backlash of the prequels. The Force Awakens poster eventually revealed the first look at Maz Kanata, but we didn’t see any footage of her until the film came out.
Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata didn’t end up having a big role in the final two sequel trilogy films, but there’s a chance we could see her show up in future Star Wars stories. On Instagram, Lucasfilm concept artist Christian Alzman shared an early design for Maz Kanata that is very different from the finished product and you can check it out below.

Early unused design for Maz for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I was trying to get the feeling of thick, heavy glasses without using them in the design. #starwars #mazkanata #conceptart #characterdesign #theforceawakens #digitalart
