What better way to celebrate Memorial Day than by making Captain America a Nazi? Or as many keyboard muscles bound internet thugs like to believe, Nick Spencer’s decision to make Captain America a Nazi.

But is it as controversial as people think? And if it’s a gimmick – is that such a bad thing if it gets people reading comics? We talk about all of that with our guest, columnist Marc Lombardi!

Check out an excerpt from the podcast:

“While there are indeed political undertones that reflect Nick’s political leanings (ahem Liberal) I’m here to tell you that it is NOT the end of the world. And there are NO need for death threats. Nick Spencer and Tom Breevort have been interviewed by everyone from your usual suspects CBR and Newsarama to Time Magazine and Entertainment Weekly. Is that a bad thing?”

Ok, unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve heard about the controversial Nick Spencer written Hydra Captain America story that’s been making waves throughout the industry. But is it as controversial as people think? And if it’s a gimmick – is that such a bad thing if it gets people reading comics?

Sure, the majority of outrage (and death threats apparently) are coming from folks who don’t actually READ the comic, but speaking from experience, whatever gets butts in the seats is all right with me. So should we give him a boyfriend while we’re at it, as the hashtag suggested? Not necessarily. I’ll explain why that one might be too offensive to ever turn back from.

Hydra Captain AmericaSo sit back and join me and my guest, @PCUncovered columnist Marc Lombardi as we debate Hydra Cap. heck, even Chris Evans gets to throw in his opinion.

We’ll also touch on Jeremy Irons stunning comments on Batman V Superman and more. Join us Wednesday 8:30 pm ET live via TalkingAlternative.com for the next episode of Secrets of the Sire.

Captain America’s had quite the week! On our latest episode of Secrets of the Sire we welcomed Social Media expert Brian Bish to discuss the impact hashtag campaigns like #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend and #GiveElsaAGirlfriend are having on our movies.

Check out an excerpt from the podcast:

“Which brings us to the latest movement on full display for all the world to download. The #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. And the newest which only just materialized over the past 48 hours: #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend. And an article I posted on the Secrets of the Sire Facebook page: The Gay Star Wars relationship fans have been chatting up between Finn and Poe. You can go to facebook.com/secretsofthesire or SecretsoftheSire.com and click on the latest blog post to read it.

Bottom line? It’s a trend. Not the cause itself. The cause has something very important at its core – inclusion, acceptance, role models – and we’re going to welcome a terrific guest in the next segment who can personally speak to that fact. But thanks to social media its just more static thrown into cyberspace. It’s just more noise. It’s more political views being thrown at people who don’t have time to properly process it.”

The world’s gone gay! But what about a galaxy far, far away? With a recent rumored relationship between two prominent male Star Wars characters squashed by actor John Boyega, it begs the question: when, if ever will we see a gay romance portrayed in any prominent Disney owned superhero/sci-fi movie franchise?

Recently, I wrote an article addressing the rumor that Poe and Finn might have struck up more than a bromance, after a proposed Rey and Finn relationship was also struck down.

“It’s so not true. Oscar [Isaac] wishes it was though, it’s all in his head. It’s a brotherly love, a bromance, that’s for sure.”

And just this week there was an online movement called #GiveElsaAGirlfriend where fans petitioned to see Disney’s Elsa in a lesbian relationship. Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa, told ET Online, that she thought a scenario like that “would be great.”

Smashing Pumpkins’ front man Billy Corgan made headlines this week for his so-called “rant” against Donald Trump protestors and Bernie Sanders supporters.

And while anyone who actually watched his 30-minute appearance on Infowars would argue he was actually opening up the discussion on free speech in America, the Internet quickly cut-and-paste a few choice words into click-bait gold and suddenly Corgan became the Donald Trump-loving libertarian that’s complaining because he’s not allowed to use the N-Word (yes that was an actual argument made by Someecards.com).

The irony of course, is that what happened to him was exactly the what we was warning us about – the idea of forced “inclusion” and how social media has brought us closer to George Orwell than ever before.

“It’s pretty remarkable that I could say one word right now that would destroy my career. It’s a meme and I’m a horrible person.”

Are we one hashtag away from living in 1984? It’s not too far a stretch. With the PC gestapo castigating anyone that doesn’t fit the company line of “inclusion,” comedians, celebrities and even every day fast food workers out there have to watch their every step for fear their words or actions might go viral. One bad day could cost you your job, as was the case with this Starbucks employee whose actions caught on tape resulted in her dismissal from the company.

And while, yes, the ultimate goal of inclusion and acceptance is an admirable one, whose to judge what is inclusive and what isn’t?

What do you think? Is Billy Corgan way off base? Join us Wednesday 8:30 pm ET live on TalkingAlternative.com as we discuss the looming threat social media and PCism poses to free speech in America.
